About Me
Throughout my career as an editor, technical writer, and occasional designer and illustrator my goal has always been to make or help ideas, stories, rules, be clear and cogent.
On the east coast, or here in Portland, Oregon, from before I’d had children until after they grew taller than me, I've worked with words and pictures, pictures and words: editing work for native and non-native English speakers creating scientific papers, government documents, academic texts, fiction and engineering standards; writing book reviews and training videos; creating magazine illustrations. My audiences have varied: children, teachers, community members, nonprofit, government and corporate entities, and the shifting internet general public.
The tasks cross the boundaries of content type and form. Always there’s understanding the content, the intent and the audience as much as possible, meeting deadlines, staying organized, replying to questions quickly, being ready to revise and revise again, and sometimes just staring at code to find a missing bracket.
I’ve been lucky in the range of challenges I’ve faced from researching the best images of world-changing political events for next-day, national publication to managing the conversion of thousands of engineering documents from a print-based to an xml-based software, to distilling complex energy efficiency information into 30-second, bite-sized pieces.
Humans are complicated creatures. Figuring out how to teach, tell, and share ideas matters, and it is really fun. … I also love pizza and movies and walking a lot, photography, and how odd people are.
